Alex Rae has claimed that the SPFL could be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if they award Celtic the title after 30 matches.
On Friday the SPFL and SFA suspended football due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus with UEFA optimistically hoping that domestic seasons can be completed by June 30.
No firm decision has yet been made but there is a growing feeling being put about that Celtic are pushing to be awarded the title. With a 13 point lead and eight matches left to be played the hoops will get on with whatever decision is made, looking to build on the gap that stood at just two points two months ago.
In 30 SPFL fixtures this season Neil Lennon’s side have dropped just 10 points with an impressive 28 out of 30 picked up since the new year.
Rae has been sharing his views with a number of media outlets, tonight he has been involved in a Q and A with The Sun:
3) It’s believed the SPFL and SFA could be prepared to cut the season short with current positions proving final. That would mean Celtic being crowned champions and Hearts being relegated. The same situation would unfold in the leagues below. Would that be fair?
For me the problem is, how can you give someone a title that they haven’t won yet? It questions the integrity of the competition. If you gave Celtic it, does that open up a possible law suit? Hearts will say, ‘we signed up to a 38-game league, how does that pan out?’ Ann Budge has already put her cards on the table. How you can relegate a team when that event hasn’t happened, is beyond me. We’ve seen it time and time again where teams survive or avoid relegation on the last day. There’s potential litigation. Say you have to go to the Court of Arbitration, how long does this all play out for?
Tomorrow morning the SPFL Premiership clubs will host a conference call to discuss the situation caused by the Coronavirus.
