Ciaran Donnelly of Albion Rovers has revealed that John Beaton admitted he made an a**e of it when he allowed a controversial goal from Bilel Mohsni to stand in a quarter final tie in the 2014 Scottish Cup.

The Coatbridge side took the lead in the 14th minute through Donnelly that stunned Ibrox with the visitors still in front at half-time.

Ally McCoist had international stars such as Lee Wallace, Lee McCulloch, Fraser Aird and Dean Shiels in his side but as the second half progressed an upset was looking more likely.

With Celtic already out of the tournament the Scottish Cup was wide open with things getting more and more anxious at Ibrox.

In the 78th minute Mohsni raised his arm to reach a cross from the left as he bundled the ball and goalkeeper Neil Perry into the net.

The Rovers players turned to Beaton then surrounded the referee to award a foul but no decision was forthcoming with the match ending 1-1 with Rovers losing the replay which was played at Hamilton.

Reflecting on that decision in an interview with the Daily Record goalscorer Donnelly said:

I don’t really go over it a lot but I still think we were robbed a wee bit; I’ll probably always think that until the day that I die. It was a cracking success for the club financially, and getting to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.

The Motherwell game probably never gets as much coverage as it deserves. Motherwell that year finished third and were flying high under Stuart McCall.

They obviously had guys who have played in the Champions League like Stephen McManus, really good players like James McFadden.

Against Rangers I don’t think anyone gave us a chance, but because of the turmoil Rangers were going through at the time I thought it was a good time to get them.

I always remember saying to one of my mates that I thought we had a chance, he was liked ‘no chance’, but I said we genuinely do.

We went there and scored, and we were quite comfortable. I don’t want to be too critical, but it was a poor refereeing decision.

John Beaton after it said he made an a**e of it – it was disappointing. For the fans, the players, the staff; it would have created an occasion to get into the semi-final. These things happen. You look back at it now and it was a good run.

The incident hasn’t hampered Beaton’s career with the Lanarkshire official quickly promoted to Category 1 and a place on the lucrative FIFA list.
