Former Albion Rovers defender Barry Russell has accused John Beaton of robbing his side out of a famous Scottish Cup win at Ibrox six years ago.

The Lanarkshire side were rank outsiders for the tie as they travelled to Glasgow to face a side managed by Ally McCoist and able to call on international stars such as Lee Wallace, Dean Shiels, Fraser Aird, Ian Black and Lee McCulloch.

Rovers provided a shock when Ciaran Donnelly opened the scoring in the 14th minute with the home fans far from happy with their side at the interval.

As the second half developed there was little sign of a breakthrough for the Ibrox men, in a desperate attempt to salvage something from the match McCoist sent Bilel Mohsni into attack.

The Tunisian ace did just that, with 12 minutes left to play he launched himself into goalkeeper Neil Parry with his arms outstretched to force the ball into the net.

Whether it was handball or a foul on the keeper the Rovers players turned to Beaton for a decision, the Lanarkshire based official signalled goal and pointed to the centre circle.

Speaking to the Daily Record goalkeeper Parry said:

I thought it was a foul on me because Mohsni lead with his arm. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if the incident had happened at the other end of the pitch.

I’m disappointed by the referee’s decision but I won’t allow it to detract from what we achieved against Rangers. We’re delighted with our draw and it’s anything but a hard-luck story.
