Gary Caldwell has become the latest former Celt to feed the media with the asterisk story.

With the null and void campaign falling by the wayside it seems that the asterisk option will be used to try and deflect away from Celtic’s likely title success.

Other than being asked what should happen if ye SPFL season can’t be completed Neil Lennon hasn’t passed any comment on the current situation with the Celtic boardroom predictably quiet.

Yesterday UEFA announced that they were hoping that domestic leagues could be completed by the end of June but that hasn’t stopped the critics and cynics.

Over the course of 30 matches Celtic have dropped 10 points. That form has allowed them to build up a 13-point lead at the top of the Premiership, whatever means they use to define the 2019/20 season Celtic will almost certainly be declared as champions.

Covering Caldwell’s interview on Sky Sports News, The Sun reports:

Celtic are currently 13 points clear and could be handed the title with Hearts relegated if the season can’t be played but Caldwell believes his former side won’t want an asterisk next to their name.

He said: “I think that’s really difficult. My own opinion on it would be to finish the leagues whenever that can be because nobody would want a little asterisk next to their name.

“I think the relegation is probably even bigger than who wins the league because of the financial implications that would happen to Hearts.

“Obviously, with it being a little tighter at the bottom, that situation can change if the games get played. That is a really difficult decision for whoever has to make that, but I hope at some point we can finish the games and give the league winners the title on merit.”

Perhaps if Caldwell commented on losing the 2008/09 season to a club that failed to declare the disguised remuneration scheme that they used to pay players to the SPL his new comments might carry some credibility.

Earlier this season Caldwell was sacked as manager of Partick Thistle.
