Roger Mitchell has revealed that the football authorities have a points formula to decide the SPFL in the event that matchs can’t be completed. Over the weekend a simulation from the BBC revealed that there was a 98.87% chance of Celtic winning the title.

The former SPFL Chief Executive is now based in Italy but keeps a keen eye on football across the continent with a special interest in the Scottish game.

When football was suspended on March 13 by the Joint Response Group it instantly triggered a debate about ‘What Happens Next’.

Almost everyone is in agreement that the best solution is for the current season to be completed but with each passing day and medical update that prospect seems less likely.

On Tuesday UEFA announced the postponement of the European Championships with the month of June opened up to domestic leagues to complete their campaigns.

Fitting in eight rounds of fixtures, three Scottish Cup matches and potentially two European Championship Play Off Matches before the end of June seems ridiculously ambitious with Mitchell dismissing that notion as wishful thinking.

Explaining the likely outcome the first Chief Executive of the SPL told The Scotsman:

So here’s where I think we are today: Uefa want the domestic leagues restarted by the end of April but I know a lot of football people around Europe and that’s total fantasy. The thing is, the leagues know this, so we are in this phase where everyone is pretending there will be a finish.

What my friends are saying to me is that at some point Uefa or the national governments will instruct the football bodies to call an end to 2019-20. This will be done. The season will not be null and void. Promotion and relegation will be decided. There’s a formula for ascertaining likely points totals but I don’t think in Scotland this will change anything: Celtic will be champions and Hearts will be down.

So far there has been no indication from Scottish football’s Joint Response Group of their preferred solutions as they await instructions from UEFA and the Government.
