Jermain Defoe has been ruled out of Sunday’s Glasgow derby.

The veteran striker is Steven Gerrard’s top scorer in the SPFL this season with 13 goals but will have to sit out Sunday’s match due to the recurrence of a calf injury.

Defoe had to be stretchered off during the 2-0 win over Ross County on January 29 but returned for the Scottish Cup defeat against Hearts.

After a brief appearance against Hamilton last week be suffered a recurrence of the injury and will take no part in the weekend derby clash.

Looking at tomorrow’s game against Bayer Leverkusen Gerrard told the Daily Record:

Ryan Jack won’t make it. Defoe will be out for a couple of weeks with a calf problem. Tavernier didn’t train today with a foot problem but will give him until the last minute to make it.

Since the turn of the year Celtic have stretched their lead at the top of the table from two points to 13. Gerrard’s side have managed just nine goals in the SPFL this year with the hoops now 25 better off in terms of goal difference.

Tomorrow night Gerrard will have Alfredo Morelos and Flo Kamberi available for the striking role. Olivier Ntcham and Jozo Simunovic are Celtic’s main injury worries.
