Gary McAllister wants to see the 2019/20 SPFL season played to a finish.

With Hearts and Aberdeen the first clubs to flag up their financial problems Scottish football could look very different if the 31st set of fixtures are delayed until September or later.

Since March 13 the Scottish game has been suspended with clubs coming to terms with an abrupt and unexpected halt to their regular income streams.

There has been some suggestions that the current league positions are declared as the final slots but for now it seems that everyone inside the game wants the current season to be completed.

“I don’t see any other way,” McAllister told The Sun when he was asked about that scenario. “We have got to finish the leagues somehow but I realise there are a lot of: ‘What ifs’. Does the season get shortened when we eventually get back?

“With the Euros now next summer, you could have guys playing football for two years non-stop to catch up. What happens about contracts that are running out in the next few months?

“But you would take all the problems just to get the current season finished. We’ve been trying to work backwards off the dates that have been mentioned. Uefa want to get domestic leagues finished by June 30, so we’re all working towards that end.”

On Saturday the Highland League declared Brora Rangers as their champions despite having six matches left to play but no professional league has followed that lead.

The Joint Response Group of Scottish football are issuing regular updates but seem unlikely to make any major decision without first being instructed by UEFA or the UK Government.
