With his past record Keith Jackson must have hesitated a little before introducing Stuart Gibson to the Daily Record’s army of readers.

Just recently, with the launch of Craig Whyte’s book the Record’s leading reporter explained how he got things so horribly wrong over the Motherwell billionaire.

Jackson was far from alone on that story but his off the radar wealth quote has been difficult to shake off.

His former Daily Record colleague, James Traynor, was just as gushing as he produced a few pages to compliment Jackson’s introduction.

There have been other saviours since Whyte came on the scene. In 2012 Charles Green was the straight talking Yorkshire businessman who told the gullible that ‘e ‘ad bought the ‘istory.

Jim McColl was waiting in the wings, Paul Murray was a right good blue nose and well connected but it’s nine long years since Ibrox hosted a non-cringeworthy title party.

Dave King swept to power in March 2015 but the new regime has overlooked unprecedented success for Celtic. Ten domestic trophy wins on the trot across the city wasn’t part of the South African based businessman’s manifesto.

Now all hope rests with Gibbo. His personal wealth probably won’t let him write off the sort of money that Douglas Park has ploughed in to a loss-making business.

With a global emergency going on the Hong Kong based businessman will require deep deep pockets if he is to avoid joining Whyte, Green and King looking over enviously as the trophies pile up in the east end of Glasgow.
