Ibrox fans flocked to social media to react to the news that Dave King had walked away from their club with Follow Follow the focus for reaction.

Fifty weeks ago King was telling fans that ‘We are now within tangible reach of Rangers becoming the dominant force in Scottish football again’ to ensure a queue to renew season tickets as Celtic closed in on a Treble Treble.

Another trophyless season awaits conclusion but there is barely a word of criticism aimed at ‘Mr King’.

‘He saved our club’ and ‘Thank You DK’ were the most popular reactions in-between calls for a statue and other accolades. It seems that the son of a Castlemilk policeman can do no wrong.

In January there was no fresh spending in the transfer market, over the last two months the gap to Celtic has been stretched by 11 points.

Not even the circumstances of last night’s announcement have caused even distant alarm bells to ring.

Friday evenings are always a red flag but King decided to issue his statement to the Press Association rather than the club website. The departing chairman made his announcement at 8pm with the club announcing their ‘delight’ at Douglas Park’s promotion two and a half hours later.

As the new regime pick up the baton they can only look in amazement at the glowing tributes to Mr King as he cuts and runs.
