The SPFL have warned clubs that they have no fighting fund to compensate for loses due to Coronavirus.

Tonight’s EPL match between Manchester City and Arsenal has been postponed with numerous Champions League and Europa League matches being played behind closed doors due to the spread of the virus.

The SPFL has got three rounds of fixtures to get through before the post-split fixtures are announced with some slack in the card due to an international break and the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup.

Matchday income contributes a massive part of income to Scottish clubs but if clubs have no Business Interruption insurance they could be facing a significant shortfall if games are played behind closed doors.

The Sun reports:

In a statement given to the PA new agency, a spokesperson for the SPFL said: “Of course, we will implement any instructions from the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, as public health remains the overwhelming priority.

“We have already made clear publicly and to the Scottish Government that there will be dire financial consequences for our clubs if matches are played behind closed doors or cancelled.

“We have written to all clubs advising them to examine their insurance arrangements in case of matches being affected. This is particularly important as the SPFL does not hold reserves.

“Every single penny of income from sponsorships, broadcast deals and cup revenue is already paid to the clubs as fees.”

Celtic have one more home match, against St Johnstone on March 21, before the SPFL split with three home matches scheduled after the split.

All of the post-split fixtures are scheduled for weekends which leaves the midweeks clear if the split is delayed to complete the first batch of 33 matches.
