Stewart Regan has ruled out pleas to declare the current season null and void.

One un-named SPFL club floated the idea last week but that appears to have been ruled out as it would open up a legal minefield with claims coming in from sponsors and broadcasters.

The suspension of football due to the Coronavirus is unchartered territory for football with the authorities looking for guidance from UEFA plus the UK and Scottish governments.

Last Tuesday UEFA optimistically stated that they hoped that domestic leagues could be completed by the end of June but with each passing day and medical update that seems less likely.

As things stand Celtic are 13 points clear at the top of the SPFL Premiership with eight rounds of fixtures still to be played.

Speaking to BBC Scotland Regan said:

I don’t envy the job the board of the Scottish FA and the SPFL have to do but I believe strongly you cannot end the season almost completed.

I think the most pragmatic outcome is to treat this period as a pause, and when it’s safe to come back and start football again you recommence the season at that point and finish it.

It’s possible to do that with the will of all parties concerned, and that will allow a fair outcome for all the teams that are involved at the top and bottom of every division.

There will be no outcome that is welcomed by every club but at the top of three of the four SPFL divisions there are clear leaders.

Scottish football’s Joint Response Group are expected to provide an update later today.
