Chris Sutton and Ally McCoist have clashed over how this season’s SPFL title should be decided.

Since football was suspended on Friday there has been fierce debate over this season’s title with Celtic 13 points clear with eight matches left to play.

A resumption in three months’ time would run into the transfer window with a number of SPFL players out of contract at varying dates through May and June.

With no sign of any worthwhile cash coming in since March 7 many clubs are facing real hardship with the option of declaring the season over allowing the SPFL to make pay-outs with the current positions becoming final.

UEFA have held back from making a big decision with the ruling body today postponing the European Championships in the hope that domestic leagues can be completed by the end of June.

Many SPFL clubs will experience real hardship without any income till May but, dreading another 9-in-a-row for Celtic, it seems like McCoist would happily cut off his nose to spite his face.

The Sun reports:

Sutton says: “We all hope that the season can be resumed but if it can’t then the fairest way is to make Celtic champions and Hearts are relegated.

“I can’t think of fairer outcome. Celtic have been the best team in the league. I’m not saying Hearts deserve to go down but they have been the worst team.

“If I was a Celtic player and Rangers were 13 points ahead and given the title I would accept that although I would be disappointed but I understand there will be those who won’t accept that.”

McCoist shoots back: “You cannot possibly give a team a title when they haven’t won the title – and I include Liverpool in England in this.

“You can’t reward a team for something that hasn’t happened – ‘there you are, you’re the champions’ when you’re actually not the champions.

“More importantly you cannot punish a team when the season isn’t over – i.e. Hearts. The football authorities must exhaust every potential avenue to finish the season.”
