The Daily Record has turned on Steven Gerrard.
For almost two years the Liverpool legend has been given the messiah treatment even through humiliating cup defeats and bizarre signings.
Kyle Lafferty and Eros Grezda lasted barely 12 months before being paid to leave while Derek McInnes outsmarted Gerrard in two cup competitions last season.
Alfredo Morelos has been linked with a string of glamorous moves, even to Barcelona, while within the last month the Record found someone to tell their army of readers that Ianis Hagi will one day be worth £100m!
Back to back defeats from the teams at the bottom of the table seems to have triggered a U-turn with the image of Gerrard dominating a special investigation into this season’s title collapse.
Titled ‘THE GERRARD SLUMP’ it is accompanied by a picture of a despairing manager staring into the ground as he contemplates another title party across the city.
Leaving aside the breathtaking hypocrisy of an attempted newspaper taking about the “collapse of Rangers*” when it is a hotbed of liquidation denial, this is quite something. Someone has clearly decided NOT to release a squirrel to deflect attendtion from Gerrard… pic.twitter.com/Ad5luevZGx

Note paper’s angle playing up Player Power rather than managerial authority. As you imply, jabba preparing the masses for departure of ‘that useless manager’, meaning season tickets will still be bought to see these ‘poor wee players who we’re missing managed’. @Pmacgiollabhain

This is about causing reputational damage to the Gerrard brand so he resigns sans pay-out.

Gerrard is a ‘name’ south of the border any deliberate debunking of him up here by press types might backfire badly for them if the media down there get involved.

Fortunately for Gerrard, in December he signed a new contract committing him to Ibrox until 2024.
