UEFA hand bombshell decision to Doncaster

UEFA vice president Michele Uva has told the SPFL that they will have to make their own decision on how to decide this season’s title race.

Since football was suspended on March 13 there has been a distinct lack of leadership from within the Scottish game as they looked to UEFA and the UK Government for a lead on what to do.

One un-named club was quick to suggest that 30 rounds of fixtures are declared null and void but that option would leave the SPFL (made up of the clubs) wide open to compensation calls from broadcasters and sponsors.

Declaring the current positions as final while announcing no relegation would seem the most obvious compromise but as he demonstrated in 2012 making a decision unpopular at Ibrox is something that Neil Doncaster will avoid at all cost.

With most of Europe in Lock-Down UEFA’s June 30 deadline is looking increasingly unlike being met but rather than roll out a ruling to all member countries UEFA will hand responsibility for a decision to each member association.

Uva told The Sun:

It is not a matter of our competence; it will be each league to decide. The only question concerns those players who are due to expire on their contracts or loans as of June 30th, but it does not concern UEFA which will only ask for a list of teams that will participate in the next European cups by a certain date.

Celtic are currently 13 points clear with eight matches left to play. One simulation used by the BBC predicted that there was a 98.87% chance of the hoops going on to win the title.
