David Marshall has recalled how he was in the wrong place at the wrong time- as the legend of Artur Boruc arrived at Celtic.

The young keeper has made his mark in 2004 with his incredible performance against Barcelona and kept his place in the side until the end of the season, picking up SPL and Scottish Cup winners medals as a teenager.

In Martin O’Neill’s final season in charge of Celtic Marshall shared goalkeeping duties with Douglas but the former Dundee man left the club in the summer.

Gordon Strachan inherited Marshall and Magnus Hedman but brought in a young Polish keeper on loan for a season to provide competition with Hedman instantly side-lined.

Marshall was in goals for the Champions League qualifier away to Artmedia Bratislava. When that 5-0 defeat was followed by a 4-4 draw away to Motherwell it was time for change even though the young keeper was virtually faultless as the hoops defence shipped in nine goals.

That was it for me. I remember the manager pulling me for the [Artmedia] return leg.

He said, ‘listen, you’ve not done anything wrong in the games but we’ve conceded nine goals in two and I feel as if I have to change it.’

To be fair, Artur was doing really well in training as well. It was disappointing. That was the time deep down I knew I was leaving.

If we beat Artmedia and Motherwell, you never know what could have happened.

With Boruc having his loan deal converted into a permanent move Marshall moved on to Norwich and Cardiff and is now at Wigan and back in favour with the Scotland national squad.
