Celtic’s critical contract situation

Celtic’s contract situation is relatively unexposed by the current suspension of football.

In normal circumstances when players are approaching the final 12 months of their deal it is decision time. If they haven’t signed up again the chances are that they are looking to move on either in the summer window or to wind down their contract to leave as a free agent.

Negotiations would be going on at this stage with both parties getting a feel for whether a player is wanted or he has his eyes on a move elsewhere by ‘keeping their options open’.

According to Transfermarkt.co.uk Jozo Simunovic, Scott Brown and Kundai Benyu are the only players all out of contract at the end of May 2021.

Simunovic has already revealed that his contract is up at the end of this season, Benyu hasn’t played a first team match August 2017 while it seems that the captain has a special relationship with the club having regularly signed two year extensions in recent seasons.

The extension of the current season could cause a problem in goals with Fraser Forster and Craig Gordon out of contract at the end of May.

The loan deals for Moi Elyounoussi, Moritz Bauer and Daniel Arzani are due to come to an end but of those five players only Forster has been a regular.

After two video conference calls UEFA have still to make any announcements relating to player contracts or the transfer window.
