Frank McAvennie has taunted Alister Johnston by telling the Ibrox director that next season Celtic will be going for a record ‘Nine-and-a-half-in-a-row’.

Yesterday the American based 71-year-old created hysteria when he claimed that awarding the 2019/20 SPFL title to Celtic would require an asterisk to be added to the record books.

Johnston sat on the board at Ibrox from 1998 when the club concealed from the SFA and SPL the dual contracts given to players and management which were later ruled on as disguised remuneration by the Supreme Court.

Stars such as Alex Rae, Barry Ferguson, Neil McCann, Steven Thompson, Kris Boyd and Billy Dodds enjoyed the good days with Johnston on board but are now being chased for Income Tax, National Insurance, interest and penalties by Her Majesty.

With Celtic leading by 13 points it seems that 9-in-a-row is inevitable but the suspension of football has allowed delusions to set in among the gullible who watched their team lose successive matches to the team at the bottom of the SPFL Premiership less than two months ago.

An asterisk or a half title would bring some form of consolation to Ibrox fans with McAvennie hitting straight back at Johnston’s ridiculous comments.

The former Celtic striker told The Sun:

If he is saying it would only be eight and a half this year, does that mean Celtic would be going for nine and a half next season?

That’s still better than nine, isn’t it? It would still be a record. All the Celtic supporters would need to do is change the words to their ‘ten in a row’ song.

They did that with Brendan Rodgers. He was here for ten in a row and then it was seven and a half! The bottom line is Celtic want to play the games if possible. They don’t want to end the season now.

If they were asking for the Premiership to be called off that would be a different situation. But Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell have both stated publicly they want the games to be played.

So how can you have a go at Celtic?

The obsessed Johnston was playing to the gallery, providing a useful deflection the day after wage deferrals were introduced at Ibrox with James Tavernier the only player to comment on the move.

Later today SPFL Premiership clubs will host a conference call to share updates following recent UEFA comments.
