Friday will be D-Day for the SPFL as they hope to conclude the 2019/20 season for the bottom three divisions with repercussions for the top flight.

Celtic’s 13 point gap at the top of the table overshadows all other issues with the hoops due the biggest share of the prize money and a place in the Champions League qualifiers.

Mixed messages have been coming out of UEFA in recent days but unlike the Belgian Pro-League the SPFL seem prepared to wait another couple of weeks before making a decision on the top flight.

After a board meeting the SPFL have proposed that the season is decided on how many points per match clubs have won, that formula would give Celtic the Premiership title with Neil Lennon’s side scoring 2.67 against the 2.31 by Steven Gerrard’s side.

Voting papers have been sent out to all clubs with a vote scheduled for Friday. With Partick Thistle threatened with relegation the club has issued a statement of protest and could follow that up with a legal challenge to the vote.

Explaining the voting set up, The Sun reports:

All 42 clubs have been given a deadline of Friday to submit a written response – with their voting slips on the resolution included in the paperwork.

As any three clubs together can bring a proposed resolution to the board, there could be more twists and turns to come – with Rangers and Partick Thistle already releasing statements that they may challenge the SPFL proposals.

Any alternative plans they come back with would be subject to the same voting tariffs which today’s proposal must meet – which is 75% of Premiership clubs, 75% of Championship clubs and 75% of League 1 and League 2 sides combined.

The Ibrox side could submit a proposal without their hands being tied by this resolution should it pass first.

Once the vote is known on the lower divisions some clarity will be provided to the SPFL board.

If it is approved they can sit tight waiting on word from UEFA before making the next move, if the proposal is rejected the board of the SPFL will need to come up with an alternative plan.
