Joey Barton has slammed James Tavernier claiming that the Ibrox skipper ‘can’t defend for toffee’.

The former Wigan utility man was signed by Mark Warburton in the summer of 2015 and has racked up over 250 appearances as an attacking right-back.

Time and time again his lack of defensive ability has been exposed with just a Petrofac Cup winners medal in his collection since moving north of the border.

Ahead of the League Cup Final in December Chris Sutton described Tav as a serial loser with Barton quick to highlight the failings of his former team-mate.

Reflecting back on his final appearance for Sevco, a 5-1 derby defeat to Celtic, Barton told Anchor FM:

When Senderos is sent off he makes a substitution which puts me as the middle man of a back three with Lee Wallace and Tav right and left side centre half of a back three with ten-men against Celtic and we are already behind.

That’s why he has never kicked on.

Tav was handed the captaincy of the club by Graeme Murty and retained the honour when Steven Gerrard took over as manager.
