Kris Boyd has urged Neil Doncaster to make a quick decision on the 2019/20 season.

Belgium stirred the nest on Thursday when they announced that Club Brugge would be declared as their champions after 29 rounds of fixtures.

Celtic have a similar lead at the top of the SPFL Premiership but after a decade in the job big decisions are something that Doncaster goes out of his way to avoid.

At every turn the SPFL chief executive tries to find a fudged middle ground that suits no one and highlights how the rules of the game are always up for debate.

Two seasons ago Hearts fielded an ineligible player in a Betfred Cup tie and had two points deducted. In any UEFA competition that match would be recorded as a 3-0 defeat, ask Sion or Legia Warsaw for evidence.

With Null & Void, championed by a small, noisy group of Scottish pundits, off the table Doncaster has to choose between waiting to complete the current season or call it over, relegate Hearts, announce Celtic as champions and read the angry toothless statements from Ibrox.

Waiting for the pandemic to clear could be disastrous for a number of Scottish clubs meaning that Doncaster effectively has one option.

In The Sun, Boyd explains:

GOOD luck to the SPFL when it comes to making a decision on what happens next in Scottish football. They’re going to need it.

I’ve often been hard on the likes of Neil Doncaster, but I wouldn’t like to be in his shoes right now, that’s for sure. Crown Celtic champions and Rangers fans will be up in arms. If that means relegating Hearts then they’ll be enraged.

Rule the season null and void and Celtic supporters will never let anyone forget about it. In an ideal world, we’ll be able to return to action and sort out everyone’s differences on the pitch. For Doncaster’s sake, I hope that’s how it all pans out.

But all I urge him is this — make a decision quickly please. The uncertainty isn’t doing anyone any good.

The SPFL Premiership clubs are expected to hold a conference call on Wednesday.

Boyd has no comment on the turmoil at Ibrox following Dave King’s sudden exit.
