No Soppy deal for Celtic

Brandon Soppy is apparently a €1.5million transfer target for Celtic. If you are believing any aspect of that story the players surname is quite appropriate.

The prospects of Celtic spending any money on transfer fees this year are remote, there is no guarantee that a single fan will pay into Celtic Park again this year.

That may be over dramatic but what can be said with near certainty is that there won’t be a 60,000 crowd before the end of this year. Celtic Park filled with fans is the club’s greatest selling point.

If the last few years have taught us anything about the Celtic board it is that they are risk aversive, in the extreme.

At various times they have had the chance to show their financial muscle without risking the future of the club. Not since the signings of Thomas Gravesen and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink more than a decade ago has the club put the playing squad ahead of the bank balance.

Yet, this morning The Scotsman reports:

Celtic have set their sights on French youth international Brandon Soppy.

According to reports in France the Parkhead side have submitted a bid of €1.5million + bonuses for the 18-year-old.

Celtic have been linked with the Rennes right-back previously but will likely face competition from RB Leipzig to secure his services.

Spending money isn’t a priority or consideration for Celtic at the moment. In case anyone hasn’t noticed Jeremie Frimpong and Lee O’Connor signed long term contracts last summer.

Having two or maybe three players in each position isn’t likely to be an option going forward.

The football world has been shaken over the last month. Most of the old assumptions have been dismantled.

The transfer trail of A/B/C to Celtic, onto Southampton then to X/Y/Z has been broken and is unlikely to resume any time soon.

Soppy won’t be joining Celtic, perhaps his agent or his club would like to think it is an option but for the next year or two Celtic’s transfer business will barely be recognisable.

VIDEO CELTS VERDICT Apart from being young and French nothing stands up in this story, Celtic won’t be speculating on more projects for a while.
