Douglas Park faces a massive week as he gets to grips with the accounts handed to him by Dave King’s swift exit for South Africa.

With the backing of 80% of clubs the SPFL has authority to declare the Premiership season over at any stage with the title awarded to the club with the highest average points per game- Celtic with 2.67. It could come as early as Thursday depending on what way UEFA moves.

As he weighs up the week ahead Park has a projected £10m shortfall for the season that didn’t take account of a missing £2.3m from Hummel/Elite although more predictably Ross Wilson was unable to raise a penny during the January transfer window. April pay-roll is coming into view.

At this stage of the year season ticket money should start to filter through but there has been silence so far on that topic. Five matches remain outstanding on this season but with no provision for refunds supporters may decide to wait and see before splashing out to see if another Celtic title success can be prevented.

Summarising the situation facing the Interim Chairman etims states:

They have only until the league is declared over to announce an insolvency event for it to mean they lose their fifteen points this season, when it doesn’t matter, but also potentially lose any European income next season, or they can wait unti next season and give Celtic a fifteen point lead in the race to ten, which would, of course, not make it much of a race, more a sort of procession.

It is quite a call to make, after months and years of booting the can down the road the cash flow problem has been highlighted by the suspension of football.

Producing statements/supporter updates and leaks to friendly newspapers doesn’t really deal with the issue.

There is no guarantee of football before September, when it does return matches will be played behind closed doors or to greatly restricted crowds, maybe 10-12,000 at Celtic Park and Ibrox.

Celtic have multiple income streams, a credible board of directors and access to an overdraft if things really got tight. Park has none of those options, just an entitled fan base that demands Celtic are stopped.

Sometimes solving the problems of car sales and coach hire with social distancing might seem easier than keeping the lights on at Ibrox.
