A report in The Sun has claimed that the EPL will be back ‘in weeks’ with Behind Closed Doors matches available to watch on ITV and BBC.

Six weeks after football was suspended EPL clubs are feeling the pressure from the prospect of having their broadcast income greatly reduced.

Supporters and ticket money are very much secondary, a nice background feature, compared to filling those large gaps in the schedules of Sky Sports and BT Sport.

The Sun reports:

PREMIER League football could be back on TV within weeks — in a major boost for bored Brits.

Boris Johnson has been briefed on plans for matches to be played behind closed doors and sees the resumption of live sport as key to boosting the morale of the nation after weeks of being shut inside.

It is understood that some games could be aired on public platforms to stop people going round to pals’ homes if they were only available on Sky Sports or BT Sport.

Government insiders said it was likely that the EFL would start later because of the logistical and financial challenges.

Sport is considered one of the first activities that can return after the coronavirus lockdown as it is simple to control compared to reopening pubs, theatres or cinemas.

The UK Government has come under increasing pressure to explain the next steps in battling the pandemic with signs of a relaxation of Lockdown becoming more important.

After a few weeks out of the spotlight the return of Boris Johnson could signal the return of football which will get one high profile industry and distraction underway.

Live televised matches will give fans something else to focus on, boost broadcasters and gambling firms and provide a major step towards a return to normality.

Most clubs have nine matches left to play with Liverpool just two points away from clinching their first ever Premiership title. The relegation issue currently has six clubs within two points of being dropped into the Championship and a £100m drop in income for next season.

There is no details given for of a resumption of the EFL or Scottish Premiership.
