Celtic fans can forget about staging title parties this week.

Yesterday UEFA announced that they would consider special cases for next seasons competitions where domestic leagues were unable to be completed.

That would cover the SPFL who have been given approval by more than 80% of clubs to award this season’s Premiership title based on average points won per game.

Tomorrow UEFA’s Executive meet with a timetable expected to be announced to complete this season’s Champions League and Europa League competitions.

That will remain the priority ahead of rulings on this season’s title races with the Daily Record reporting:

A Hampden source said last night: “UEFA clearly want leagues around Europe to hold off before making any final decisions on ending this current season so they are unlikely to give permission for countries to do their own thing. There is no chance the SPFL will just ignore this and declare Celtic champions on Friday.

“But it is expected they will be open to requests from any league which has ‘exceptional circumstances’ and the SPFL will most probably be one of them as our new season is scheduled to begin with the League Cup in the second week of July.

“And that’s before the latest Government advice is even factored into the equation as well as the First Minister’s warning about the dangers of playing games behind closed doors.”

Last night the Dutch Government announced that there would be no football played before September 1 which puts the Dutch League at the front of the queue for special cases.

The SPFL don’t want to be seen rushing to award Celtic the title but with UEFA changing their stance a ninth title, this time on points average, is only a matter of timing.
