Celtic fans can relive a piece of history on Friday night when Sportscene provides a re-run of the 5-1 Glasgow derby from November 1998.

Lubo Moravcik announced his arrival at the club with a brilliant double- in the last Glasgow derby that wasn’t live on television.

Both teams were under new management that season but Dick Advocaat had been given a small fortune to bring in new signings while Dr Jo Venglos took over a Celtic squad where half of the players had been involved at the World Cup Finals in France.

Despite a 0-0 draw at Ibrox in September Celtic’s defence of the league title had barely got off the ground. A bonus dispute highlighted the problems behind the scenes, highlighted by a dismal 3-0 defeat from Croatia Zagreb, featuring Marco Viduka, in the Champions League qualifier.

Signing an ageing Slovakian from a mid-table German side never excited the Celtic support but the departure of Jock Brown sparked euphoria and a 6-1 home win over Dundee.

The following week the hoops lost 2-1 at St Johnstone before a fully reconstructed Celtic Park filled up for the Derby clash, at Ibrox fans clamoured for the beam-back.

BBC Scotland report:

On Friday, you can watch highlights of Celtic’s 5-1 league win over Rangers from 1998 – that’s from 19:00 BST on BBC Scotland and the BBC Sport website.

Tony Warner, on loan from Liverpool, made his home debut but it was Moravcik who dominated the match as Advocaat’s side were dismantled.

Within a week Celtic were selling VHS recordings of the full 90 minutes, rumour has it that the sales paid the £350,000 transfer fee to Duisburg that brought Moravcik to Glasgow. The magician repaid his fee many times on the park.
