Ally McCoist was the victim of an April Fools prank live on radio this morning.

The former Ibrox boss watched plenty of embarrassing performances from the dug out but was caught out at home today as he joined Laura Woods and Darren Bent on TalkSPORT’s breakfast show.

Alan Brazil has caught McCoist out on a variety of subjects but his successor at the radio show decided to try out a Zlatan Ibrahimovic story on their Scottish co-host.

The Swedish legend has expressed his love of Celtic at various times but with massive contracts collected while winning titles in Spain, Italy and France before stints at Manchester United and LA Galaxy he hasn’t really came close to wearing the hoops.

Listening in to TalkSPORT this morning the Daily Record reports:

They said that his love for Henrik Larsson growing up meant he wanted to have a go at playing in Scotland and it would also be an opportunity for him to add a fifth different league winner’s medal to his collection.

Completely unaware it was a wind-up, McCoist said matter-of-factly: “Scottish football over the years have had some great Swedish players.

“Going back to when I first signed for Rangers and we had Robert Prytz playing for us, played in a European Cup Final with Malmo against Forest. Of course you’ve got Jonas Thern, Henrik (Larsson), (Johan) Mjallby was a great player for Celtic as well.

“I don’t know if there’s a little bit of that when he was growing that he saw some of the Swedish players playing in Scotland. Clearly he has had an absolutely outrageous career.”

McCoist was in full flow by now as he gushed: “Truthfully, I think it would be great. With Scottish football, we need every boost we can get at this moment in time so I think in terms of the game, what a profile.

“Obviously with Steven Gerrard coming up to Rangers, that gave Scottish football an extra profile. It’s another level again if Ibrahimovic came to Celtic and truthfully, I think it would be fantastic.”

Eventually Woods and Bent dropped it to McCoist about what date it was. After a very brief pause, McCoist responded with a simple, dry: “I think you two are really funny…”.

Mikel Lustig won eight more Scottish league winners medals than Prytz and Thern combined.

Brazil will be back co-hosting the Breakfast Show tomorrow and Friday.
