James Tavernier has claimed that the Ibrox first team stars have agreed 50% pay deferrals to retain the jobs of non-playing staff at Ibrox.

Tonight the club issued a statement explaining the reasons for the cuts and their intention to put none-playing staff on to the UK Government Furlough Scheme.

With no retail staff at the club it’s unlikely that more than 150 people are directly employed but safeguarding those jobs has been put forward as the reason for the cuts with The Sun reporting that the players have taken 50% reductions

On the club website tonight James Tavernier explained:

I want to place on record our appreciation to every single member of staff for their determination and resolve during these unprecedented events. I’m very proud of the reaction of everyone at Rangers to the challenge we face throughout the UK and beyond.

As a team, we were adamant that we work together to do all we can to secure the future of the football club. We are also acutely aware of the livelihoods and wellbeing of our staff.

In reality, it was an easy decision for players and senior staff. Now is the time to work with unity of purpose, as the Rangers family, to ensure that everyone works together to maintain our institution. Today has made me proud to be Rangers captain.”

Tonight’s news first appeared on Sky Sports with the club issuing a statement soon afterwards.
