Ally McCoist is claiming that an asterisk will be placed against Celtic’s 2019/20 Premiership title win.

Yesterday, more than two months after they played their final match of the campaign, Neil Lennon’s side were confirmed as champions based on average points per game.

With just eight matches left to play Celtic were 13 points clear and powering their way to the title when Scottish football was suspended.

Over the course of 30 matches Celtic won 26, in the 10 games since the winter break Lennon’s side stretched their lead at the top from two to 13 points but that’s not good enough for McCoist.

Listening in to the radio this morning The Sun reports:

Asked on talkSPORT whether there should be an asterisk next to this campaign, McCoist said: “Do I think it should? Sorry, it will.

“I don’t understand the question, of course it will have an asterisk next to it no matter what anybody says. By the way, it’s through no fault of Dundee United’s, through no fault of Celtic’s or anyone who’s been promoted or won the title.

“It will have an asterisk next to it, of course it will. You’re not going to tell me you’re not going to look back at this season and say they were awarded the title or awarded promotion. Of course they were.

“Neil Lennon’s right, Celtic were the best team in the league. They’re 13 points clear. Of that, there is absolutely no doubt but there’s a big, big difference between the word ‘asterisk’ and the use of the word ‘tainted’. Massive difference.

“The title and the promotions aren’t tainted. They’re not tainted but clearly and understandably, you can’t argue there’s not going to be an asterisk because this season has been different. The asterisk will say, through no fault of their own, this season has been different.”

McCoist was manager of Rangers back in 2011 when Celtic started out in their 9-in-a-row run of successes.

By November Celtic were trailing by 15 points when they faced Motherwell at Fir Park but once Lennon’s side put a run together McCoist’s title hopes imploded with Celtic winning the title before the end of season split.
