Chris McLaughlin, BBC Scotland’s Sports News reporter expects the SPFL board to call the Premiership season this coming week.

The last full round of fixtures was played on March 7 with the 2020/21 season scheduled to start on August 1.

Over 80% of the 42 SPFL clubs voted to decided the leagues based on average points per game with that formula used to decide the three lower divisions with Dundee United, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers announced as champions.

That formula will see Celtic presented with the title, their ninth in succession while at the bottom Hearts will be relegated to next season’s Championship.

Yesterday on Radio Scotland’s Sportsound (1 hour 19 minutes) show, during an interview hosted by Richard Gordon with Hamilton director Alan Maitland, McLaughlin said:

Richard, my understanding is there is every chance, absolutely every chance that the league (Premiership) will be called next week, late next week.

Maitland revealed that it was his belief that the majority of clubs were resigned to the 2019/20 season not finishing on the park. He also said that starting the 2020/21 season on schedule was the priority with the opening matches almost certainly played behind closed doors.

On March 13 the Joint Response Group suspended Scottish football, unlike authorities elsewhere no date was put on when the suspension was lifted.

The following week UEFA suspended the Champions League and Europa League with the 2020 European Championships put back 12 months.

At the start of April the Scottish Government announced that there would be no group training permitted before June 10 with UEFA announcing that they will consider ‘special cases’ for next season with the examples of Scotland and Belgium mentioned in their statement.
