Celtic have been linked with a move for Waasland-Beveren defender Aleksander Vukotic.

The 24-year-old has spent the last two seasons with Beveren but after their relegation from the Pro League they are expected to be looking to cut costs with Vukotic under contract until 2023.

Celtic are expected to be cautious in the transfer market this summer but are short of back up in central defence for Chris Jullien and Kris Ajer.

In December when Neil Lennon rested many of his top team players for the Europa League tie against Cluj Ajer and Jullien were both in the starting XI.

Belgian website Le Soir reports:

The left-hander central defender Aleksandar Vukotic (24) should not make old bones in Waasland-Beveren, relegated to Division 1B, as he attracts interest despite a contract that covers 3 seasons yet.

The most concrete interest comes from Mechelen, with whom discussions have started and who holds the rope. Abroad, Celtic Glasgow, who should lose their Norwegian defender Kristoffer Ajer, bound for Leicester, who positioned himself for the Serbian, the tallest player (2.01 m) in our championship.

Nir Bitton and Hatem Abd Elhamed have been used as back up central defenders with Robbie Deas and Stephen Welsh also available after spending some time on loan in the Championship.

Before joining Beveren, Vukitic spent time with Bosnian side FK Krupa na Vrbasu.
