Whatever else he does in his life the Irishman can be assured of the eternal gratitude of every Celtic fan for his Derby Day goal at Ibrox last September.

With six minutes left to play Hayes replaced Mikey Johnston who had tormented James Tavernier all afternoon.

Picking up the ball in his own half Hayes squared to Edouard then raced into the huge gap behind Tavernier. After his initial shot was blocked the ball broke kindly to him for the moment that every Celtic fan dreams about- knocking it into the near vacant net at Ibrox to clinch a victory.

Others might have wanted to goad the home support after scoring but Hayes headed towards the corner flag where 800 ecstatic away fans were going crazy in the sunshine of a win at Ibrox clinched in the sweetest fashion imaginable.
