A report in the Daily Record claims that Inverness chief Scot Gardiner had a Plan B in place to Null and Void the season as he rallied support to reject the average points per game proposal put forward by the board of the SPFL.

At the start of April the nine members of the SPFL board put together a proposal to finish the four divisions allowing clubs to be paid prize money based on their final position despite the season being unfinished.

If passed the three lower divisions would be settled instantly while dialogue was maintained with UEFA before deciding the Premiership leading to nominations for the2020/21  Champions League and Europa League.

To be passed the resolution needed the approval of 75% of Premiership, Championship and the combined votes of clubs in League One and Two.

Three Championship sides were needed to bring down the proposal. Gardiner was certain of the vote from Inverness and bottom placed Partick Thistle and tried to gain a third vote with a proposal for Null and Void which would have increased the pay-out to each of the bottom six clubs but cost his own side Inverness £175,000.

This morning the Daily Record reports:

Now Record Sport has learned in the build-up to that vote Gardiner had informed other Championship clubs he had drawn up a counter proposal which he intended to table had the Dens Park stuck to their guns and brought the SPFL’s survival plan crashing down.

And we understand that plan would have seen the season null and voided, preventing relegation for Hearts, Partick Thistle and Stranraer while also potentially stopping Celtic, Dundee United, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers from being crowned champions of their respective divisions.

One Championship club told us: “Scot’s proposal was to effectively null and void all four divisions. When you consider the catastrophic financial ramifications for all clubs it was hard for anyone to understand his motivation. Even now it’s still impossible to figure out what Inverness Caley Thistle thought they would gain from doing that.”

Yesterday Dunfermline  Athletic and Brechin Cityissued statements critical of Inverness.

Today all 42 SPFL clubs will meet by conference call to vote in an EGM over whether an independent investigation should be held into the vote to decide the season based on average points per game. 75% of the clubs in each of the three categories need to approve for the proposal to be passed.
