Lazio are set to join the battle to sign Ianis Hagi in the close season.

In less than a dozen matches at Ibrox, including defeats from Hearts and Hamilton, the midfielder has gone from being a Genk reject to the most sought after playmaker on the continent.

Manchester City and Spurs are keeping tabs with Real Madrid following developments closely. One Romanian expert claimed that Messi and Ronaldo didn’t have the same level of ability when they were 21 despite playing for Barcelona and Manchester United.

Now, The Sun reports:

LAZIO are set to pounce for Ianis Hagi if Rangers don’t take up their option on the loan star.

The Light Blues have first refusal on the Romanian midfielder after agreeing a transfer fee believed to be around £4million with Genk in January.

Hagi is keen to remain at Ibrox, with boss Steven Gerrard also hopeful of sealing a permanent deal.

It has been reported that Genk inserted a £4.5m release clause in the loan deal that Ross Wilson secured at the end of January.

Despite starring for Romania at the u-21 European Championships in the summer Hagi Jnr moved to Belgium rather than a club in one of the top five leagues.

Gent brought in Eboue Kouassi on loan from Celtic before releasing Hagi on loan.
