Fifty-three years ago today 11 footballers and an inspirational manager changed the map of the game forever.

Until that sunny evening in Portugal the European Cup had only switched around between Madrid, Lisbon and Milan. Amsterdam, Munich and Liverpool hadn’t been given a look in at the trophy that now dominates European football.

Back in 67 Jock Stein called upon his Celtic side to break the mould with every generation of Celtic supporters familiar with the story and stories of the Lisbon Lions.

Looking at the map below puts their achievement into perspective, from Glasgow and its surroundings a former miner from Burnbank turned the football world upside down.

The 2-1 victory over Inter Milan barely tells the story of the match as the homegrown Scots laid siege on the Italian goal in the heat of the Portuguese evening.

Despite falling behind early in the match to a penalty Celtic dominated the match, pinned Inter back and handed them a beating that the watching world enjoyed.

The following night a converted lorry took the trophy round the perimeter track at Celtic Park, on board were a group of local players whose legend hasn’t diminished one bit over the last 53 years.
