There was a mix of emotions as Celtic fans read the Daily Record report that ‘Rangers had given the green light’ to Celtic being named as 2019/20 Premiership champions.
With a 13-point lead and eight matches left to play the decision has been earned on the pitch not awarded on a conference call.
Over the course of 30 matches Neil Lennon’s side have only dropped 10 points, anyone believing that the squad that had stretched their lead from two to 13 points since the turn of the year were on the verge of collapsing has clearly spent too long socially isolating.
In Glasgow football rivalry is as fierce as anywhere else in the world with one team’s success the failure of another.
Celtic fans have been quick to celebrate their teams imminent title award despite the apparent threat from Ibrox which reached its peak during the January break.
Lennon’s side spent three weeks dealing with the fall out from losing the Glasgow derby with their immediate fixture list including trips to Kilmarnock, Aberdeen and Motherwell.
Whatever they did in Dubai has paid off, Celtic reeled off eight wins on the bounce, drew at Livingston then finished off with a 5-0 home win over St Mirren.
That match looks like being their last match of the Premiership campaign, the formalities have been completed with just a large rubber-stamp with CHAMPIONS 2020 still to be applied.
