Tom English has laughed off comparisons that he is the James Traynor of 2020.

While still holding down a job at the Daily Record a decade ago Traynor took to his part-time job with Radio Scotland as an unofficial guardian of all matters Rangers.

Dave Murray had been loyally backed for years with allegiances quickly switching to Craig Whyte when the former billionaire climbed the marble staircase to take charge in the Blue Room.

As the empire collapsed around Whyte he could count on the dual support of the Record and Radio Scotland before finally in January 2012 Traynor accepted the inevitable that the club was about to die.

With circulation of The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday falling off a cliff edge English happily jumped on board the life raft offered by the state broadcaster.

On numerous subjects he has shown little understanding of the issues involved and unlike Traynor has a paper-thin contact book outside of the world of rugby.

Since deciding to champion the case for an independent investigation into an SPFL vote English has become even more illogical. Any suggestion or questioning of the evidence was trashed on air and on Twitter.

Yesterday’s dossier has been derided by many media outlets as a water pistol rather than a smoking gun. In true Traynor-like fashion English will back his horse through to the bitter end, till the knackers’ yard beckons.
