Walter Smith could barely mention Celtic winning 9-in-a-row as he made an appearance on The Football Show this morning.

The former Rangers boss joined Kelly Cates and Graeme Souness to share grief over another season at failure as Neil Lennon’s side sweep all before them.

If Celtic continue to dominate next season Smith and Souness will have even more to mourn over with the post winter break collapse a real cause of concern.

Going into the winter break there was just two points between the two Glasgow clubs but when football was suspended on March 13 Celtic had raced into a 13 point lead.

Asked about the reaction from Ibrox to Celtic’s title win Smith told Sky Sports:

Hopefully it will spur them on, I don’t think that there is any doubt that for Rangers they’ve had a lot of years now where Celtic have been uppermost in the league, they’ve had a really good team that has managed to win nine championships, well eight championships in a row and this one for a ninth.

All the smaller countries in Europe have decided to finish their leagues, do the same thing as we’ve done in Scotland so. I think whether we like it or no we just have to accept it and get on with it.

Rangers under Steven Gerrard have been making progress over the last couple of seasons, can get together and hopefully try to prevent Celtic getting ten. I think that the winter break for whatever reason has caused them a little bit of a problem, I don’t really know why.

At the start of the season they put in some terrific performances, two really good performances against Celtic and we thought that the team was getting upto that level. Somewhere since the break they have been a little bit disappointing, I’m sure Steven will want to rectify that as soon as he gets back

In 1997/98 Smith signed Jonas Thern, Lorenzo Amoruso, Sergio Porrini and Rino Gattuso to join Brian Laudrup and Paul Gascoigne in the bid to win 10-in-a-row. Celtic under new boss Wim Jansen won the league by two points.
