In football it only takes a few months out of action to get labelled a forgotten player.

Three years ago, Kundai Benyu arrived at Celtic on a ‘Dembele deal’ the phrase given to Celtic’s cross-border raids on young out of contract players from England. He had apparently impressed on loan at Aldershot after falling out of favour at Ipswich Town.

The early signs were promising, he appeared as a substitute in Champions League qualifiers against Linfield and Rosenborg but after getting injured on his SPFL debut at Kilmarnock his Celtic career halted.

Brendan Rodgers was so impressed by the early signs that the planned loan move never happened but by January the midfielder was on his way to Oldham Athletic in League One where he made just four appearances.

Last summer another loan was arranged with Hellsingborgs but even a spell with Henrik Larsson did little for his career.

Benyu hasn’t been included in the 30 strong squad of players back in training at Lennoxtown, with his contract expiring at the end of this season he’ll go down with Marvin Compper as one of Rodgers’ strangest signings.
