The SPFL are looking at revived Betfred Cup plans that would involve sectional matches for clubs outside of the Premiership.

In normal circumstances the competition would begin in the second week of July involving all member clubs except those in UEFA competitions.

Groups of five provided clubs with four matches with 12 qualifiers joining the teams in European competitions for a straight knock out competition.

That format has suited Celtic who have won the tournament in each of the last four seasons, winning two ties to take them into the semi then final.

Much will depend on how many teams are in the top flight but with the Premiership starting in August it looks like the sectional stage will be exclusive to non-Premiership clubs and used as their preparations for the season starting in October.

Queen of the South explained to their fans:

All being well it looks like we will make a return to action on the pitch from early October.  With three Betfred cup matches pencilled in from the 7th and the Championship matches for season 2020/21 likely to commence on the 17th of October with teams playing  27 games.

The SPFL are talking to clubs in league one and two to discuss their plans before issuing fixtures for the Betfred Cup.  We would hope to have these fixtures and details of our league matches in the next few weeks.

With UEFA publishing their calendar for next season the SPFL are expected to publish their 2020/21 Premiership fixtures next week.
