Gavin Strachan has been confirmed as Celtic’s new first team coach, replacing Damien Duff who takes up a coaching role with the FAI.

Strachan has been assistant manager to Darren Ferguson at Peterborough United with the move to Celtic his first direct involvement with Scottish football since loan spells at Dundee and Motherwell in the early days of his playing career.

With his dad Gordon a former Celtic manager the demands and expectations of Celtic shouldn’t be any surprise with Neil Lennon and John Kennedy on hand as part of the first team coaching set up.

Lennon told the Celtic website:

We are delighted to bring Gavin to Celtic, he is a brilliant appointment for us and someone I know will work really well with myself, John Kennedy, the players and the rest of our backroom team.

We had a number of options for the role but Gavin was the outstanding candidate. He is a really talented, experienced, hardworking and respected coach and I know he has the right qualities to make a great contribution to the Club. We are all really pleased to welcome Gavin to our team.

With the target of 10-in-a-row at the end of the current campaign Celtic aren’t wasting any time as they put together their backroom team.

Duff was promoted from reserve team duties in February 2019 when Lennon returned as caretaker and instantly earned the respect of the players.

Strachan had a much more low key playing career, Hartlepool United was the club that he played most games for, but after stints at Doncaster and Peterborough he has more coaching experience than Duff plus a very knowledgable dad to call on.
