Damien Duff has taken up a coaching role with Shelbourne’s u-17 squad.

The former Chelsea and Blackburn winger resigned from his position as Celtic’s first team coach to return to his family in Dublin and a key role in Stephen Kenny’s new look international backroom staff.

Duff had previously coached at Shamrock Rovers with The Independent reporting on his new job at another League of Ireland club:

DAMIEN DUFF is returning to the League of Ireland scene as head coach of Shelbourne’s national league Under-17 squad.

It is understood that the Dubliner – who quit Celtic last week to take up a position on Stephen Kenny’s Ireland senior backroom staff – has accepted the post after mulling over the offer for a number of days.

The Ireland centurion previously coached Shamrock Rovers’ Under-15 squad for two seasons before joining Celtic in January 2019 as assistant coach of their reserves.

Duff will reunite with two of his staff from Rovers, including Shels defender Luke Byrne. They are due to commence training next Monday but are awaiting confirmation of fixtures due to ongoing discussions among clubs on formats around the senior campaign restarting on July 31.

In January 2019 Duff took up an offer to assist Tommy McIntyre with the Celtic reserve side but a month later he was assisting caretaker boss Neil Lennon with the first team.

Coaching the first team ensured that there was little time off with family commitments forcing him back to Dublin where his kids are at school.

Earlier this week Celtic announced the appointment of Gavin Strachan to work alongside Lennon and John Kennedy as the club gears up for a massive season domestically.

Strachan has already started work at Lennoxtown with Celtic expected to find out next Friday their opponents for the August 1 start of their campaign to win a 10th successive Scottish title.
