Jonny Hayes has admitted that he has taken a financial hit to re-join Aberdeen.

The Irishman was released by Celtic after a three year spell in Glasgow and didn’t hesitate over a move to his home from home.

There may have been more lucrative offers elsewhere if Hayes had held out but after spending five years at Pittodrie he had no hesitation about signing up for Derek McInnes’ side.

I appreciate it is a tough time for the club given the current climate with the pandemic but everyone wanted to make it happen. I was more than happy to play my part by foregoing some financial gain and I am just thankful it was concluded positively.

I want to come back and win some winners medals. I think everyone associated with Aberdeen deserves it. There have been a few near misses with some of the recent finals, but it would be very nice to come back and win some trophies.

Hayes made his last appearance for Aberdeen in the 2017 Scottish Cup Final where he opened the scoring before Tom Rogic’s last gasp winner.

With his new deal he’ll be able to play a full part in pre-season training with the squad that he joins much changed from the one that he left.

Ryan Jack, Kenny McLean and Graeme Shinnie have left the club but after a brief spell in South Korea Niall McGinn is back at the club.
