Alex Rae believes that Steven Gerrard is just four players away from winning the SPFL Premiership.

The usual follow up would be ‘yeah, Ronaldo, Messi, Virgil van Dijk and Barrie Mackay’ but the former St Mirren boss doesn’t name the stars on their way to Ibrox.

Since the signing of Ianis Hagi was announced some incredible predictions have been made about the impact of the Romanian even though he flopped badly after moving on loan at the end of January.

With gate money the main source of income at Ibrox and pay-outs due to Sports Direct, Hummel/Elite and Memorial Walls spending should be limited but that has never stopped anyone from Ibrox in the past.

Rae has been predicting a title party since 2016 but has named the positions that Steven Gerrard must strengthen to stop 10-in-a-row.

Rangers will need a right-back and a left-back. Jon Flanagan and Andy Halliday have gone so there is no cover there.

In the middle of the park, there is the argument that a bit of needle is required. From the start of last season to the winter break, Ryan Jack was as good as anyone in Scotland in the middle of the park. But he picked up injuries and the team struggled without him.

Steven Davis and Scott Arfield are both there but if anything happens to Jack, Rangers lack physical presence. Potentially, they will need someone of that ilk.

I think another striker is needed as we don’t even know if Alfredo Morelos will stay. But I don’t think major surgery is required. Steven will be comfortable his starting XI can go toe-to-toe with anyone.

The problems will arise when injuries and suspensions mount up — that’s where Celtic have strength and depth.

Celtic could also strengthen four positions in their starting XI but after his first full season back at the club Neil Lennon has imposed how own stamp on the squad he inherited.
