Craig Gordon has told Celtic that they will need to come back with a better offer if he is to extend his stay at the club.

The keeper’s contract expires this month but unlike Jonny Hayes and Jozo Simunovic there has been no official announcement of his departure from the club.

Gordon was first choice keeper until returning from Dubai in January 2019 when Scott Bain was given a run in the team.

A hand injury to Bain in August last year opened the door for Gordon to reclaim his place but Neil Lennon moved quickly for Fraser Forster who had an outstanding season leaving Gordon restricted to just six appearances during the season that he turned 37.

Forster’s loan spell has ended but his presence at Lennoxtown complicates the issue with Gordon with the former Scotland keeper telling The Sun:

With Celtic, the ball is in their court. They’ve made an offer but they know they’ll need to come back with something better. My contract has lapsed and I’m free to talk to anybody. That’s what I intend to do over the next few weeks. St Mirren have made me a good offer and other clubs have also been in touch. As things stand I haven’t closed the door on anybody.

It seems unlikely that Celtic will improve their offer to Gordon until they know the outcome of their interest in Forster.

Bain also reported for training yesterday but at this stage it is impossible to say whether Forster or Gordon, neither or both will be at Celtic next season.
