Ewan Murray has hit out at ‘chuckling Celtic fans’ after SPFL clubs rejected a plan for league reconstruction that would have catapulted Hearts into the Premiership.

The Guardian’s golf reporter makes no secret that his football affection lies at Tynecastle but relegation seems to have impacted on his ability to weigh situations up impartially.

After a variety of attempts to gain a place in the top flight a proposal was sent to clubs for a 14-10-10-10 set up for next season. Just 16 of the 42 clubs voted in favour, had it gone to an EGM the proposal would have required 11 out of 12 Premiership clubs to vote in favour alongside 75% backing from the lower divisions.

Tynecastle will be missing from the Premiership next season, and, despite repeated ticketing problems it remains a favourite away day for Celtic fans.

Neil Lennon’s return as manager was marked by a dramatic stoppage time winner from Odsonne Edouard in February 2019, in the season just finished the hoops enjoyed a 2-0 at Tynecastle in December thanks to goals from Olivier Ntcham and Ryan Christie.

It looks like Tynecastle will be out of bounds for Celtic fans in the season ahead, sparing Murray the pain of chuckling hoops fans enjoying another win down Gorgie Road.
