Andy Halliday has revealed how he won over Steven Gerrard only to be ditched by the current Ibrox boss.

The True Blue utility man was signed by Mark Warburton then sent out on loan to Azerbaijan when Pedro Caixinha took over from the former city trader.

Halliday knew that he had his work cut out to impress Gerrard with much of the squad that he inherited in the summer of 2018 destined for the exit door.

Graham Dorrans, Greg Docherty and Jason Holt were among the casualties of the new regime but Halliday went out of his way to impress the new gaffer when Gerrard walked in the iconic gates of Murray Park.

Former transfer guru Mark Allen is believed to have ear-marked Halliday for the exit door but the new boss was won over- before ditching the 28-year-old when his contract expired.

Picking up on the first day’s of Gerrard’s regime during Halliday’s interview on Open Goal, the Daily Record reports:

He just said ‘Well listen, you’re coming to Marbella with me, just keep up what you’ve done in the first four days because I’ve liked what I’ve seen’.

So it was just a case of going over to Marbella and continuing that, trained well, played well in the bounce games and he pulled me again when we came back from Marbella and said ‘as long as I’m at this football club you’ll be part of it’, obviously in the early phases but it was brilliant to hear that. But I could see from early that he was going to be a good manager.”

Since being released at the end of his contract Halliday has been linked with moves to Hearts and Fleetwood Town.
