Neil Lennon is hoping to have Damien Duff’s successor in place next week.

The former Chelsea and Newcastle winger was side-by-side with Lennon and John Kennedy for 13 months that brought Celtic all of the domestic matters.

Family reasons forced Duff to return to Dublin where he has taken up a prominent role in Stephen Kenny’s new look international coaching team.

Duff joined Celtic in January 2019 to assist Tommy McIntyre with the reserve side but was promoted immediately after Brendan Rodgers decided to move to Leicester.

Lennon and Kennedy have overseen pre-season training but according to The Sun a new appointment is expected soon:

Meanwhile, Lennon revealed Celtic are closing in on a replacement for Damien Duff. The ex-Hoops coach quit this month to take up a role with the Republic of Ireland.

Lennon wants a third coach to work with him and No?2 John Kennedy — with an external candidate likely to be brought in.

He said: “We’re hoping to have someone in place next week.”

Since Rodgers departed for Leicester taking three coaches with him there has been no additions to Celtic’s first team coaching staff other than Lennon’s return.

During his first stint as manager the Irishman was assisted by Alan Thompson, Johan Mjallby and Gary Parker.

None of that trio are currently involved in coaching although there has been mention of an in-house appointment with Stephen McManus and Darren O’Dea working with the Celtic Academy.
