Steven Thompson can’t come to terms with Celtic winning 9-in-a-row.

Life in the media hasn’t been much fun for the former Rangers striker as he is forced to put a brave face on constant success in the east end of Glasgow.

Fifteen years ago Thommo helped deny Celtic numerous trophies when he was part of a squad assembled by Alex McLeish thanks to the illegal tax scams of Dave Murray.

Players that wouldn’t normally be affordable lined up to pick up their win bonuses and hush-hush monies were piled into offshore trusts.

Dave Murray claimed that he was using Employee Benefit Trust’s but in July 2017 the Supreme Court confirmed that it was a scam for disguised remuneration.

Rather than state his own views on Celtic’s success he prefers to quote the thoughts of ‘Rangers fans’, a tactic that his former team-mate and fellow tax cheat Alex Rae works to perfection in his media appearances.

At the turn of the year Thomo had hope that his years of pain were coming to an end but the pain of another false dawn were all over his contribution to the BBC Scotland podcast:

The clubs and the SPFL board were desperate to release funds to the clubs and that was the reason everybody voted for the league to be concluded. I felt there was not enough time and consideration given to trying to explore every possibility to finish the season.

Hindsight is a great thing but looking back now, if the SPFL board were not in such a rush to get it done, I think we could have been back. The amount of games left, you could have squeezed the games in.

We weren’t to know that James Anderson was going to come up with a big pot of money and a lot of things have happened. But in terms of fairness with Hearts being relegated and of course all Rangers fans think Celtic ‘s title is tainted, they wouldn’t have been any of these questions had we finished the season.

The last trophy to arrive at Ibrox was in May 2011, won by a team of players on dual contracts concealed from the SFA and SPL, when the club went into liquidation Hearts and Rapid Vienna were among the clubs stung for transfer fees.

There is no meaningful form of Financial Fair Play in Scottish football.
