Even as a 2-year-old Ilie Dumitrescu knew that Ianis Hagi was going to be one of the greatest and most expensive footballers ever.

During the nineties Dumitrescu played alongside Hagi Snr in the Romanian side that impressed at the 1994 World Cup where they reached the last eight of the competition.

Five matches in the USA earned him a move to Spurs from Steaua Bucharest but after 18 appearances he was punted out on loan to Sevilla and West Ham before turning up in Mexico.

Dumitrescu is now making a career for himself in the Romanian media and shared his thoughts on Hagi Jnr with The Sun:

He was the best player in the Under-21 national team, and before that played for all the national youth teams from Under-15s onwards.

Hagi’s the player who can make the difference. I first saw him from the age of two, so I know him very well. Back then he was the kind of kid who, if you gave him a ball, would stand out from all the other youngsters.

He was crazy with a ball from such a young age. The education and upbringing in his family has helped too. He likes to work, he’s 100 per cent focused on his job, and he’s very professional.

What’s the main difference between him and his father? Well, Ianis can kick the ball with both feet!

Hagi Jnr is in for the fright of his life whenever he returns to Glasgow with incredible expectations on his shoulders.

More than eight years of hurt will fall on his shoulders fuelled by delusions and conspiracy theories as the Ibrox club go all-in to stop Celtic from winning a ninth successive title.

Arriving in a dressing room where players took pay deferrals will require a thick skin with Andy Halliday, Wes Foderingham, Jordan Rossiter and Jon Flanagan released to make way for the Romanian starlet.
