Celtic could face four fixtures in eight days next season as the football authorities cram in the overspill of the 2019/20 season into nine months with the winter break the first casualty.

With UEFA still to complete the Euro 2020 Play-Offs and get the Nations League underway international football will make a big intrusion into the calendar with three matches from the Scottish Cup still to be scheduled.

SPFL secretary Blair told the Daily Record:

The stress on the SPFL fixture calendar next season is going to be enormous, with a real risk that some clubs will be forced to play four games in eight days, which we always try to avoid. And that’s even before we consider the impact of the Scottish winter and the high risk of cancelled matches due to adverse weather.

We have already been obliged to cancel the winter break next season because we absolutely needed those extra three potential match dates, but even with that, I think it is going to be tighter than at any time in my 22 years working for the SPFL.

With the UEFA dates to be kept clear and international breaks there is little wriggle room as the SPFL attempt to complete 33 rounds of fixtures by early April.

In the season just finished Celtic played nine matches between December 1 and 29, that sort of schedule could be more common in the 2020/21 season.
